Scleral lenses are an alternative to normal contact lenses. Generally, they are used for those who have irregular corneas because they help to create a synthetic, smooth cornea. An irregular cornea could be caused by keratoconus, for example, and must be diagnosed by an eye doctor. Another common reasoning that your doctor might recommend for you to try scleral lenses is if you suffer from severe dry eyes. The contact leaves a small space between the cornea and the lens, therefore helping to keep the wearer’s eyes from getting dry. They also go slightly into the whites of the eye (conjunctiva) making the lens more comfortable to wear than other hard contact lenses.
