Let’s Talk About Sunglasses: Your Eyes' Sunscreen

The sun's rays can be harsh on your skin and we all know the importance of using sunscreen to protect ourselves from harmful UV rays. But what about our eyes? Just like our skin, our eyes need protection from the sun's powerful rays. That's where sunglasses come in – acting as sunscreen for our eyes. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun is harmful to our eyes over time. Prolonged exposure to UV rays is associated with various eye problems, including temporary conditions like photokeratitis, which is essentially a cornea sunburn as well as more serious conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Much like sunscreen creates a barrier between our skin and the sun, sunglasses create a protective shield for our eyes. Just as sunscreen comes in different SPF levels, sunglasses are available in different lens types and coatings to suit different environments. Polarized lenses, for instance, reduce glare and provide enhanced clarity, making them ideal for activities like driving or spending time near water. If you require prescription lenses, consider getting another pair that has a UV coating for such activities.
