How to Keep Your Eyes Safe with Decorative Contacts This Halloween

Halloween can be scary, but do not let an eye infection be a part of it. Using decorative contact lenses or colored contacts without a valid prescription can cause harm to your eyes.

Decorative contacts - also sometimes called costume contact lenses - are contact lenses that change how your eyes look. More decorative or costume contact lenses can make your eyes look different in many ways from changing your pupil share, giving your eyes more of a cartoon appearance, and/or changing your eye color.

You can safely buy contact lenses directly from your eye doctor, online, or by mail order with a valid prescription. You will want to avoid buying contact lenses from costume stores, random online sites, beauty salons, drug stores, or anywhere else that does not require a prescription.

When decorative contacts are sold without a prescription, proper fitting, and knowledge from an eye doctor, there’s a higher risk of harm being done to your eyes. Packaging that says no prescription needed or any other claims of that nature is incorrect. Decorative contacts purchased without a prescription may not fit properly and can leave scratches on the outer layer of the eye or could cause an ulcer on the cornea. These eye injuries could cause scarring, infection, and/or permanent vision reduction or complete loss. Contact lenses should be tailored and customized for you.

Due to COVID-19, Halloween parties may be moved online through Zoom and other online hosts. Because of this, it may bring about more people wanting to test decorative contacts to amp up their costume since it will be over video call instead of in person. Yet, you need to be making safe choices when it comes to your eyes.

We look forward to hearing from you.
