Orthokeratology and its Benefits

Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, is the use of contact lenses that are usually worn overnight that reshape the cornea, or front layer, of the wearer’s eyes to correct vision. This practice was first invented in the 1960s and has developed and been improved immensely. The lenses only need to be worn for approximately eight hours and their effects last for a day or so. Their use can be greatly helpful for those who play sports, swim, or even just don’t want to wear eyewear throughout their day. Because its effects are temporary, there is practically no risk involved and their use can be stopped at any time should one choose to do so. Like many things, however, consistency is key with ortho-k lenses. Ortho-k candidates tend to be people with mild to moderate myopia, or nearsightedness, either with astigmatism or without. For children, the use of these lenses can low or stop the progression of myopia. With this in mind, their use is not confined to only those with nearsightedness.
